Wish
This wish has been granted!
a DESPERATELY needed chance to make art full time
I am an artist concerned with social issues, and make art to educate people and get them active in their communities.
Although very, very rewarding, this doesn't earn money to live day to day. Because I need to maintain a job to pay for my art and to pay the rent, I do not have the time to produce any art at all. Now I have an amazing opportunity to launch a new project at a major gallery, yet I have NO TIME at all to make art due to demands from my job, and increasingly cannot balance the two. The clock is ticking, and i only have 11 months left to complete a very intensive piece of art about child labour that will reach high schools all over North America. I am a hard working young lady, and have won many accolaides including a very prestigious award for Most Promising Emerging Artist in Canada. If I could wish for time I would, and that is what these funds would provide me with. My art does not generate any profit as it is not sale-able, so I stand to earn no money from this project at all. I believe very strongly in using my art to affect change in the world, and to raise awareness. My last project, ODE, can be viewed at [ link ] so you can see the quality of my work, and that I am not fooling around. To illustrate my need, I spent over $40,000 of my own money completing and touring my last exhibition. I earned nothing in return except the excitement of meeting new people and sharing ideas with people all over North America. Please, I ask you to see the value of spreading ideas, and the opportunity that time to make art would offer. I have no other resource to turn to, and no idea quite frankly what to do. (more)

I am glad this got funding!
Love you're doing. Good Luck!!
Grats on your win!
Good luck on your wish!
Wow thats fantastic, I guess wishes do come true! Thanks for your kind words on my wishes.
Congrats on your win!!
I know it's all over now anyway, but I just read this and realized that of course I know you - well- and your work...I'm really surprised at the people who have commented negatively on how others "need" the money more than you do, as if that negates your wish.
First of all, regardless of what you think of the value or expertise of someone's artwork, it's subjective - entirely. And people are entitled to their opinions. However, the people who make these comments apparently don't understand the system here - Sarah's wish didn't "compete" with charity wishes - that's why there are the "naughty" and "nice" categories -and she correctly chose "naughty" for hers. There are many artists here (myself included) who do actually need a fair bit of money to realize their artistic dreams, and I'm SURE it sounds like a ridiculous amount to people who are looking to survive - but folks, these are TWO DIFFERENT CATEGORIES - Sarah's wish getting funded didn't take ONE PENNY away from any of the "nice" wishes.
Sheesh. Give a girl a break.
thanks so much to everyone who voted!
Congrats on the win!
You could use that money to hire some low-paid children to work on the project instead of having to do it yourself!!
You have the right idea about your wish and educating people. You should hold this wish for the next $20,000 pot, which you'll have a good chance and let someone fulfill their wish with the $500. Otherwise what will you do with $500?
You are asking for way to much. The grant deserves to go to someone who doesn't have enough money.
Keep on kickin' ass Sarah! I got your back!
i've watched my points drop by 40 in the last 24 hours! i feel a little unfairly targeted! I thought this was all supposed to be in good spirit...
I make under $10,000 a year and it makes me sick to think you just blew $40,000 on a exhibition and have nothing to show for it. Go get a real job.
Why can't you sell your art? Or perhaps people think it is so bad they just don't want it?
Picasso has to make sacrifices, so should you. Thats what being an artist is all about.
And to be honest and blunt I don't find your art impressive. Now a life size replica of Darth Vader made out of legos, that is impressive. A white tank with no details and a bastardized version of a white picket fence is not.
The arts are a truly wonderful thing, but regardless of the impact you wish you make with it, it is, like Kuehnau said, something you must make sacrifices for. I choose personally to invest in guitar equipment as opposed to other forms of entertainment; such as movies, boutique clothing, video games, and so forth.
I support your wanting to create this project, and respect your right to ask for money here, but believe that other people are more needy and deserving of the wish. However, you must understand that art is not a full time job. Many people are very talented, but we don't live in that kind of idealized world.
You totally deserve it. I dont know how anyone can have as much energy and life as you do ... now for the love of god, take a day off before you explode!
It is such a bummer that artists who add so much to the world should have to struggle!! Good luck!!!! I hope your wish is granted!!!
It's not a bad wish it would just make more sense to see the $500 go to someone that can fulfill their wish. good luck in the future.
While I support your dream, I think that you are asking too much from the Robin Hood Fund.
not getting it.
Sarah, your work is inspired! I hope you win this week's pot :). It's people like you that make this site so magically delicious (not unlike lucky charms)...
Hearts, moons, clovers,
Parker
Good Luck!
I love that picture...I mean seriously who doesn't like a giant tank in their driveway?
please help me as well
.
Blowing tons of money being somewhat witty while pretending it's all for a noble cause.
Sort of an unintentional bastardy
Another person pursuing their dreams. I can identify! Go for it and flourish!
Good luck!
Great idea! Good luck!
I know what you stand for and support you fully. I hope you get your wish and I wish you all the best!
HANG IN THERE, YOU'RE AMAZING, AND YOU'RE A BABE!
I wish all young people were like you! I wish you much much MUCH luck on winning. Creative people rule!
You one fine hunny!
You should represent Saskatchewan! I'm proud of you!
You are an excellent photographer, I love your work. You should win!
Absolute crap, you dont need this money. $500 should go to someone who really would appreciate and needs this money. You have enough.
This is a worthy and noble cause, and you got one fine piece of ass!
You were wishing for something for yourself. This isn't for me. I'm trying to make my brothers birthday a good one since we are not that rich and our income is less than $20,000 every year. My computer was $650 and it nearly cleared my parents bank account. My mom is employed and my Stepdad was unemployed, because he has succumb to a serious disease, that may even be identified as cancer, he is in serious pain every day, so he cannot work, and when he tries to repair the cars and stuff at our house he ends up paying for it doublefold. Good luck with your wish though, I have never been able to afford a present for my brother.
Please check out my link and help me make my brothers birthday a good one.

The maximum amount you can win is $500 though. :(
This sounds great, good luck!
for those advising the Canada Counciland other arts grants, i have already won the maximum amount which is well under $5000 and already spent on materials. Our government has scaled back funding dramatically, and if you had a look you'd see. Canada Counsil, for your info, was also the organization that awarded me the Best Emerging Artist prize. I worked hard for four years in the film industry to raise the $40,000 for my last project, but that work is no longer available. the money i have wished for is to live without cost for a year so i do not have to work two jobs, just one that doesn't pay.
If you can afford $40,000 out of your own pocket to pay for a hobby, I think the $500 from this site is better suited to go to someone else. Go get some grants! That is more what you should be looking for. Don't get me wrong, your art is awesome, but you shouldn't be begging people who make far less than you do annually for an amount that is far greater to them than it'd be for you.
good luck sarah,i rated you 5 out of 5 cause you deserve it and it really is an excellent piece of work. I wish you win and will be behind you 100% all the way to the end. Hard work allways pays off and its your time to get payed. Good luck and I hope everybody appreciates your fantastic art work as much I do.
Love,
Ali
Have you looked into the Canada Arts Council grants? This fund isn't gonna cut it for you. If you are truly serious, you'll take the time to write out a proper grant application (it will take you about 10 hours . . . you can do it in a couple nights). They have a lot more money.
I'm not crazy about the tank. Whether you are protesting war, or advocating for it, there are soldiers overseas and we need to respect them. My cousin's son is in Afghanistan helping to keep the peace, and to keep the women free!
I made art fulltime for only $165.08...it didn't go too well. I'm no longer an artist.
Rock on.
Does anyone know if shes hot? :P
People need more important things.
I share your enthusiasm for art, so I think you should get what you wish for. Good luck, Sarah!
Hey Sarah, I wish you the best luck in winning this competition. You have amazing talent and definately should be doing art full time....
I like your art, Sarah. It's the powerful social commentary of your work that grabs me. I wish for your wish to come true.

Colin-mama... this is Ali-baba. I voted for you. God Bless.
