When I saw this wish I was going to offer you mine if you hadn't won, it does seem to have an effect but it makes me feel woogly in a bad way, maybe I'm just not using it right. Anyway, I hope yours works properly for you, SAD sucketh, yea verily. Especially in such a gloomy, cloudy locale as yours, at least here on yon prairies we get lots of sunshine in winter.

I did a quick search on eBay (try: "light box sad") and there are about 24 items listed, most are between $100 to $150, some are less. Several types and brands are listed. There are also many items in the eBay stores. Otherwise, I wish I could help, but I haven't worked in a long time. Just trying to help where I can. Good luck. Frank

Also being a WA resident, I know your pain. They say it rains a lot up here but really, it's just grey from fall - spring so it feels like rain. And that greyness does nothing for a person's mood, especially those clinically diagnosed.
I've never been diagnosed myself but I go through the "winter blues" pretty much every year and I've given great consideration to a light box like you're talking about.
Here's hoping you get it and it works every bit as well as you hope!

Hey Hagrid! Also a Bellinghamster, and also affected strongly by SAD. It's amazing how much of a difference a little light can do.
(I also recommend, however, taking St. John's Wort. It made a SERIOUS difference when I started taking it.)

Funny you should mention that... I bought a bottle of St. John's Wort from Fred Meyer in early January and started taking it when I started feeling this depressive episode coming on. I don't know if it's helped me or not, but maybe it's helped keep me propped up from sinking even deeper.

Hey, I understand what going through despression is all about. I had to take Prozac for a very long time due to my depression, and I found that my parents would always try to cheer me up by buying me gifts. They weren't big gifts but every little bit helped me so much, so I could just imagine how you would feel with a new light box. Good luck buddy!

I moved to Bellingham to go to school.
Did I know the winters here would affect me so? No I did not. This time last year I also had a depressive episode in January/February, but I didn't recognize it for what it was until this year, when it happened again.

i understand S.A.D. being an RN student. my advice would be to move further south where u would probably flourish and ur depression would improve alot!!! this seems like a temp fix, but i hope u get it if that is what will make u truely happy!

Unfortunately, moving is neiher possible nor desirable right now - I have 2 more years of school to get through. And it's only a problem three months out of the year. A light box is a much less drastic solution.

See this is really awesome. Someone who created a video and educated us all in the process. Hagrid, I hope you get this box to help you out. I've lived in Dawson City which got about 4 hours of sunlight a day during the winter. It wasn't like Vancouver/Seattle though...we usually had clear skies. Having just returned from Vancouver about an hour ago I know what the weather is like. MISERABLE. So kudos for taking the time to put this together!

its no problem, I've donated you my beer money for the next little while lol. I had a friend who was diagnosed with SAD this year, he was terribly depressed and I understand how awful it can be. I also know how effective the light treatment is, and that the next option (and what a doctor will prescribe) are anti-depressants, which I don't wish anyone to take when there's a much easier less harmful cure. I have been looking for someone to donate a bit to and this felt very worthy. Also, the ammount is small enough that a donation I can afford will actually help alot more than, say, a $10,000 wish. Also it is very modest and truthful I feel.

My dad used to live in Seattle. I had real issues not seeing the sun (overcast) for days on end when we visited (California Girl). I can only imagine what it's like further up and year round. Good Luck Man!
