my widowed mother has lost her hearing.
she can not hear the alarm clock, and may not notice the smoke detector. she has tried hearing aids, but has chronic ear infections, so a fitting isn't possible. the ear, nose, throat doctor has prescribed a hearing alert dog and hearing aids, but these are not covered by our provincial medical insurance.
the dog will receive professional training to assist my mother daily for her safety and comfort. I will also have to look for funding for training this dog, which will cost $4,500.00 Canadian. a schooled service dog costs from $20,000 to $40,000. the waiting list for a schooled dog is over two years, and the schools don't favor sending service dogs to children or the elderly.
I am unable to pay for these things myself because I am on a disability pension due to injuries from a car accident. I have a mobility service dog, which has helped me gain independence and confidence. I know how amazing dogs can be. Mom's dog would be trained to alert her when her name is called, the phone rings, the smoke detector alarms, the door bells rings, when the microwave is done, and dial 9-1-1. the dog could also help her dress when her arthritis flares.
the ball is rolling, the doctor and the dog trainer have talked. we just have to get the right dog to train, ASAP. Mom has asked the Lions Club to help pay for training the dog, and herself.
I am checking into rescued dogs, but there will still be the cost of transporting the dog to our little town. the right dog has not shown up locally. Please help my Mom live safely by voting or donating. (more)

Trained dogs can be expensive. We have been actually looking into fundraising to get a search and rescue dog for our boy. They want close to 10,000$ for one which is beyond anything we could afford. It takes up to two years to get them trained. Hope you get your wish!!!

I can comp-letly understand your mothers situation. My mother is training her black lab as a service dog as well she has a disease called M.S. You are correct whe you say that a fully schooled dog for is 20 to 40 thousand. That is why many people try to pay someone on the side to train there doy that is what my mom is currently in the process of. You got my five stars godd luck.
